Chinese and Russian Foreign Ministers Wang Yi and Sergei Lavrov held talks in Tongxi (eastern Anhui Province of China) on March 30. As a result, sides pledged to strengthen bilateral ties.
Noting that Sino-Russian ties have borne the new test of the changing international landscape, Wang said the relationship has maintained the right direction and demonstrated high resilience. “Both sides have shown a stronger will to develop bilateral relations and great confidence in advancing cooperation in various fields,” he said.
According to Wang, China is ready to cooperate with Russia to raise the countries’ relations to a higher level in a new era, guided by the consensus between the two heads of state.
Russian Foreign Minister, in turn, said that the strategic connection between the two heads of state plays an important role in ensuring the stable development of bilateral relations and promoting a multipolar world. According to Lavrov, Russia is ready to work with China in the international arena to develop multipolarity, counter hegemony and power politics, and uphold the goals and principles of the UN Charter.
In addition, Lavrov informed his Chinese counterpart on the progress of Russian-Ukrainian talks. Russia is committed to easing tensions, continuing peaceful dialogue with Ukraine and maintaining communication with the international community, he said.
Noting that the Ukraine issue has a complicated history, Wang underlined that China supports Russia and Ukraine in overcoming difficulties to continue peace talks, the positive results achieved so far, the early de-escalation of tensions and efforts by Russia and other parties to prevent a large-scale humanitarian crisis. In the long term, he said, lessons must be learned from the situation.
