Health Department Urge Doctors not to Make ‘Provocative Statements’

According to RBC, the Central Research Institute of Organization and Informatization of Health Care of the Health Department has published methodological recommendations advising doctors not to make statements with no practical sense or with veiled insults in conversations with patients.

The problem with which a person came to a medical facility should be addressed from the beginning, rather than using phrases such as “What is your issue with ...?” According to the methodological recommendations, one of the authors of which is Deputy Minister of Health Evgeny Kamkin, when speaking with a patient over the phone a doctor is not recommended to use provocative phrases. In particular, such common phrases as “young man” or “girl” are among the phrases that should not be used. It is better to say either “Mr. …” or “Ms. …” or “Could you tell me, please, … ?”

According to the guidelines, it is not recommended to say the following phrases: “Who told you that?,” “You do not understand me at all” or “What does this have to do with us?” In addition, the Health Department believes that a doctor should not use an intonation that demonstrates indifference to the patient.

The manner of communication between the doctor and the patient should not be underestimated. A person reacts very strongly to any word, because he or she is concerned, in pain and hopes to get skilled help. For the most part, doctors are polite and cultured, but there are sometimes the words mentioned above in their speech, which in no way help improve the mood and do not give the patient confidence in their abilities. This is especially important during epidemics.

Meanwhile, the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova has recently said, commenting the situation with the incidence of influenza and acute respiratory viral infections that the H1N1 strain (“swine flu”) causes serious damage to human health. At the same time, she assured that the domestic health care system is ready for an outbreak of this disease.

According to Interfax, the rate of acute respiratory infections and influenza rose by 35.4% during the week, and in 37 subjects of the Russian Federation it exceeds the national average. Cases when patients were infected with “swine flu” have been recorded in 82 regions of the country. In addition, it is specified that now the share of influenza among viral diseases is increasing and is now over 50%. The H1N1 strain is breaking all the records. There are also strains of influenza A virus (H3N2) and B virus. The Republic of Sakha, the Republic of Buryatia and the Komi Republic, as well as the Tyumen, Kostroma, Vologda and Astrakhan regions, the Chukotka, Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Districts recorded the largest number of patients.

As reported by the Parlamentskaya Gazeta, Anna Zemlyanukhina, a therapist at Moscow Diagnostic Center № 5, specifies that the “swine flu” can last up to two weeks. According to her, the fever heat can last for several days, and then the patient often develops laryngitis, bronchitis or bronchopneumonia with this strain. Such complications occur not only in the elderly, but also in young people. The traditional treatment for the flu is antipyretics and vasoconstrictors to ease nasal breathing.

Doctors also advise to drink more fluids: tea, morsels, juices, but it is recommended to get the fever down only after 38°C for adults, because it is at high temperature the flu virus dies. It is especially important to carefully look after the children who, unlike adults, can develop the fever very quickly. If it is already 39°C, it is necessary to get it down, so as not to cause brain edema.

More than 74 million people have been vaccinated in Russia. According to experts, the peak incidence of influenza could coincide with the New Year holidays. According to doctors, if 20 % or more of the students in the class are sick, the students should be transferred to distance learning.
