Since May 2019, Maxim Shugalei is illegally held prisoner in Libya. Together with his interpreter Samer Sueifan, he was taken hostage by the militants of the so-called Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya without any explanation. Every effort has been made to set them free. Maxim Shugalei has become a symbol of courage and struggle for justice.
In Malkevich’s opinion, it would be fair to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. It was thanks to Shugalei that the entire world learned that militants had seized power in Libya, creating a real terrorist threat.
Malkevich also said that there were a number of other candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. Alexei Navalny, the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, U.S. President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who ran for the 2020 Belarusian presidential election as the main opposition candidate, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern who supports abortion, and Greta Tunberg, the Swedish environmental activist, were placed on the list.
According to Malkevich, although there are deserving candidates, such as Trump and Netanyahu, it will be strange if most of the above-mentioned people win the Noble Peace Prize.
He believes that if the prize is awarded, for example, to Stepan Putilo, the founder of the telegram channel NEXTA that is actively stirring up protest actions in Belarus, or to Angela Merkel, if she tries to ban the construction of the Nord Stream-2 project, the situation would be taken to the level of utmost absurdity.
