At present, national mountain running competitions are held in 19 regions of the country. According to the schedule of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, the season is usually opened in April in the Stavropol Territory and closed in Sochi in October.
Competitions are to take place at the Rosa Khutor resort in Sochi on October 21 and 23.
Its results will be summed up during the upcoming races at the resort. The best runners will be defined during the Russian Mountain Running Cup on October, 21 and during the National Championship in long-distance running on October, 23. They are organized by the All-Russian Athletics Federation (VFLA).
Competitions in this sport appeared as early as the 11th century in the Scottish highlands, and the modern rules, standards, and categories were enforced since the late 19th century. However, for almost a century, mountain running had a clear distinction between professionals and amateurs. Many races were closed to amateur runners. It was not until 1992 that all mountain running competitions were given open status. The main difference of mountain running from other sports, such as trail-cross or trekking in the mountains, is that it is a race for speed to the finish line on a known and clearly marked course. This is the sole purpose of all mountain running participants. The course is laid out to eliminate any danger, and runners do not need any special equipment (sticks, ropes, maps). Athletes compete against each other in the speed of overcoming the same track.
At the Cup of Russia, the length of distances in mountain running up will be 1,163 m, 3,027 m, 4,177 m, and 6,150 m. Runners will run on the ski slopes to the summit of Rosa Peak with the finish at different altitudes. The best alpine runners will be determined in child, junior, primary, senior and veteran age categories. Competitions will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Mountain Olympic Village. At 02:30 p.m., there will be an awards ceremony.
On October, 23 Rosa Khutor will host Russian Mountain Running Championship's men's and women's long-distance races. Athletes will have to overcome 23,165 meters with climbing and falling in height of 1,811 meters. The route lies along the route from the Mountain Olympic Village to Rosa peak, downhill along the southern slope to the lower station of the ropeway Veronica and backwards through Rosa Peak to GOD. The competitions start at 11:00 a.m., the finish is at 01:00 a.m., and the awarding ceremony is at 02:00 a.m. in the Mountain Olympic Village.
“We are glad that the Sochi mountains are once again hosting sports competitions of the national level,” writes the press service of the Rosa Khutor resort. “We wish victory to all the participants of the upcoming competitions and we are proud that our glorious Olympic history continues and the resort continues to host major sporting events.”
