Neither Ukraine nor America are interested in peace with Russia, Russian ambassador to the USA Anatoly Antonov said after Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Washington DC.
According to Antonov, the Ukrainian President's visit, which took place on 21 December, was “staged in the Hollywood style” and Zelensky's communication with the White House administration “showed no desire to achieve peace,” although Moscow repeatedly called for common sense.
Antonov believes that the White House administration's conciliatory statements that it had no intention to enter into a confrontation with Russia are mere words. Moreover, according to him, the actions of Washington are likely to lead to unpredictable consequences, which are “even difficult to imagine.” Antonov assessed the visit of the leader of the Nezalezhnaya to Washington as an announcement of the need to bring the conflict around Ukraine to a “complete victory over Russia.”
“Huge resources, which are destroyed by the armed forces of our army, are spent on this fixed idea to defeat the Russians on the battlefield,” said Antonov.
During his visit to the U.S., Zelensky met with Joe Biden, who confirmed his readiness to strengthen Ukraine's “self-defense” capabilities. The U.S. President said that success on the battlefield would help Zelensky when he talks to Russia.
Apparently, Zelensky was satisfied with the talks with the Americans and expressed hope that the U.S. Congress would approve another $45 billion arms delivery. According to the Ukrainian President, some countries suggest that he sit down at the negotiating table with Russia, but he believes that there is no point in this since he and Vladimir Putin have “completely different” visions of peace.
We would like to point out that the $45 billion aid package to Ukraine was canceled late in the evening of December 21, that is, a few hours after Zelensky's speech in Congress. The cancellation was due to disputes over “the security of American borders during the novel coronavirus pandemic."
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that negotiations had to take into account the changed realities and “it was Kiev that withdrew from the negotiation process.” Recall that the last negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were held in Turkey on March 29, 2022. As a result, Russia received written proposals from Ukraine, confirming its desire for nuclear-free and neutral status. However, Kiev later reneged on its agreements, as well as on its contacts with Moscow. Moreover, a decision of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council on the “impossibility of negotiations” with Russia was put into effect.
Anatoly Antonov believes that the U.S. is actually continuing to get involved in the Ukrainian conflict and is “losing its sense of self-preservation.” According to him, the Ukrainian crisis was a “turning point” in the development of international relations and it is Washington that bears “full responsibility” for the unleashing of the Ukrainian conflict in 2014.
Recall that the special military operation, which began on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision to launch it was made by the Russian President against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in Donbass.
